The Department of Biology at the University of Oregon offers expertise and research opportunities in a wide range of disciplines including neuroscience, genetics, cell and developmental biology, evolution, ecology, and marine biology. Biology is the study of living things. Synonyms: biological science; life science. To this end, the Biology Department has two Diversity Committees — one comprised of faculty and another of graduate students —in order to promote equity, reduce bias, embrace and increase diversity, and build respect, inclusion, and cultural competency among all members of the department. Tri-Beta is a national honorary society for students majoring in the biological sciences.
Within the sciences, industries with demand for biology graduates include agriculture, biotechnology, ecology, genetics, neurobiology, horticulture, food science, marine biology, conservation and the environment and wildlife documentary production. It began to dominate the study of evolution, posing a series of challenges to the synthetic theory of evolution, and culminating with the views of Japanese geneticist Motoo Kimura (1924-94) and others who argued that the vast majority of variation seen at the molecular level was due to random genetic drift and mutation and not to natural selection, which acted merely in a negative or eliminative role.
We support undergraduate scholarly endeavors, train students for an array of careers in research and related professional fields, and communicate the impact and significance of biology to an array of students. Despite the heated discussions that remained about the importance of ‘evo-devo,’ or what molecular evolution meant for the synthetic theory, and despite a number of challenges from outside of science such as the ‘intelligent design,’ or ID advocates, the century drew to a close with a much broader view of evolutionary biology.
These experiences prime our students for graduate and medical school admissions as well as various careers in biology. The Biology majors can be used as preparation for graduate school or professional careers in technical fields, the health sciences and education. This field has become increasingly important in recent years, and requires students to develop significant mathematical and computer science nous, much like the interdisciplinary field of bioinformatics, which involves developing and improving on methods for storing, retrieving, organizing and analyzing biological data and developing software tools to generate useful biological knowledge.
Research All Biology faculty members share a passion for cultivating a love of research in students. In addition to subject-specific knowledge of biological systems and concepts, you develop a range of practical and technical skills and learn how to use specialist techniques and technical equipment. In years 2 and 3, you’ll build on your fundamental biology skills and knowledge. The friction between the two areas – and the protection of the lesser funded evolutionary biology – was resolved by a process of fission separating or cleaving the two halves of biology, one molecular and the other organismic (Smocovitis, 1996).
